How to: Find Quality Vintage Clothing at the Thrift Store

5.09.2011

I LOVE thrifting for vintage clothes and I've found some real treasures over the years- an amazing Hermes skirt and a lovely silk Chloe night gown (which I wear as a day dress now) to name a couple. I tend to look for 1950's-1980's skirts and dresses and I always pick up a silk scarf if I find one. I provided a few helpful tips below to aid in navigating & finding amazing vintage clothing on your next trip to the thrift. It really is such a thrill, you never know what you'll find!
-Have a plan, I always head for bags, scarves & belts first, then venture on to clothing- this helps me keep organized
-Don't be afraid of anything- I always find cool vintage slips & dresses tucked away in the intimates section
-Know your sizes, bring a tape measure, or just try stuff on
-Don't buy anything that is stained or damaged- chances are you'll never get old stains out
-Scan the isles, careful to look for unusual fabrics & prints and quality materials like silk
-Always reevaluate your findings before checking out- Ask yourself...do I REALLY need another denim skirt?
-Look for vintage & designer labels
-Go back often- the selection is ALWAYS changing at thrifts
Penny & Trout are modeling a couple of my thrifted silk scarves...tres sheik!
