I've collected many vintage accessories I've found in thrift stores over the years...it's really hard to pass up something that's $.90! Thrifting is a true skill, combined with good timing and a little luck. I thought I would share a few of my tips to help navigate those bins full of old earrings, pins & necklaces that are in every resale & thrift store.
1.Start by looking for unusual materials, this helps to separate the cheap junkie pieces from the true vintage treasures
2.Always pick up vintage accessories made of plastic...it could end up being made of Bakelite, a highly collected vintage plastic
3.I always find great stuff in the locked display cases- most people are too impatient to wait for assistance, which can take awhile in a thrift store
4. Keep an eye out for earrings with clips, unusual stone & crystal details, and untarnished metals- these are details found on higher quality vintage pieces

| A few vintage pieces made of shell, bone & wood |
| Vintage Charms |
| Penny insisted on trying on this 1960's necklace |
| A few of my Bakelite finds- I ADORE the large green cuff bracelet |
| Creepy, crawly creature pins |
| Groupings of turquoise & cameos |
| Cherries! |
Those are gorgeous collection! You have great eyes. And $0.90? On my side of the world here, necklaces/watches all around $3 or $4. I havent yet bought any earrings from thrift stores. Thanks for the tips, I will start looking.
ReplyDeleteCool, Thanks for checking out Mint Demode!
ReplyDeleteThe jewelry section is my favorite too though it does take patience having to wait for someone to show you the items! Also I hate when certain thrifts (like the Salvation Army) pile all their jewelry BEHIND the counter so it's very difficult to see.
ReplyDeleteLove the bakelite pieces & the swallow pin!
